Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas
The Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas in Sremski Karlovci, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, is mentioned as early as 1532-33, but it is presumed to have been built at the end of the 15th century, before the Turks occupied Srem. Construction of the current church began in 1758 on the site of the old church, which was devastated. The project was led by builders Kosta Cincarin and the German Johannes, and in 1760, the tower and dome were built according to the design of Zaharije Orfelin. The church was completed in 1762, and the iconostasis was painted in 1780 by the renowned painters Jakov Orfelin and Teodor Kračun, considered the pinnacle of baroque painting in the Vojvodina region. The church also houses nine large-format paintings by the artist Paja Jovanović, declared movable cultural assets.
The Cathedral Church itself was declared a cultural monument of exceptional importance in 1990.
Our team worked on the conservation and restoration of all facades and the roof structure, contributing to the restoration of this building to its former grandeur.
