Paromlin – Zagreb

Paromlin is one of Zagreb’s most important monuments of industrial architecture, with a history tracing back to the second half of the 19th century, when the city was undergoing rapid industrialization. The foundation and construction of Paromlin began in 1862, and a year later, the first building of the industrial complex was completed—a two-story mill building.

The Paromlin complex is situated between the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall and the main railway station. The revitalization project aims to transform this piece of Zagreb’s industrial heritage into a multifunctional hub that will serve as the city library and a vibrant community gathering place.

Paromlin’s architectural heritage has been protected since 1980, when the Regional Institute issued a decision granting it preventive protection as an industrial architecture monument. In 2004, the historical ensemble of Paromlin’s industrial landscape was officially designated as a protected cultural property by the Ministry of Culture, Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, and entered into the Register of Protected Cultural Goods.

KOTO’s scope of works on this complex includes the restoration of the brickwork and facades on the existing section of the transmission structure, the warehouse, and the newly constructed facsimile portion.

The greatest challenge lies in the reconstruction and restoration of the original facade brick, which demands meticulous care to prevent further deterioration while seamlessly blending with the newly built sections of the complex.

Alongside the restoration work, we are executing facade renewal efforts that encompass all elements of profiled cornices, fluting, and various specialized surface finishes.

Preparatory works, analysis, and the creation of mock-up test fields commenced in October 2025. Full-scale works began in May 2026, with completion planned for the end of 2026.
