Church of the Holy Cross
The Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Niš represents a significant monument of religious and architectural heritage, considering that Niš was the first city in Serbia where a Catholic parish was established. This church was built during the 19th century, precisely in 1858, after Niš was liberated from the Ottomans, on the site of a previous church dating back to the 18th century. Its Neo-Gothic style of architecture expresses the value and elegance of that period. Four decades after its construction, the church was expanded, and a tower was added, and in the early 1934, another floor was added.
The facade of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is adorned with a series of slender arches, massive doors, and tall windows, characteristic of the Neo-Gothic style. The interior of the church is graced by an impressive wooden altar and a wealth of relics and icons. The central place inside the church is occupied by the crucifix, symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice.
Its historical heritage lies in the fact that this church served as the spiritual center of the Catholic community in Niš during various historical periods. Its architecture and artistic details testify to the aspiration to create a monumental work, which still stands out for its value and beauty in the urban landscape of the city of Niš.
On this project, our expert team successfully repaired, consolidated, and restored this valuable cultural monument, with the aim of its revitalization and further functional use.
