Episcopal Palace
Located at the intersection of the oldest street axes in Novi Sad, at the corner of Zmaj Jovina, Nikole Pašića, and Dunavska streets, stands the Episcopal Palace. Completed in 1901, this building with stylized Byzantine and Serbian medieval architectural elements, notable facades with ochre ceramic tile cladding, is the work of Belgrade architect Vladimir Nikolić.
Alongside the Cathedral Church and Jovina Gymnasium, it represents the spiritual center of Novi Sad’s Serbs. The palace houses a chapel with an iconostasis painted by A. Avenev, while the walls of the large dining room are adorned with paintings by Vladimir Predojević. Additionally, the palace holds a collection of 16 artistic painted portraits. Today, it serves as the seat of the Bishop of Bačka. Designated as a cultural monument by the Government of the Republic of Serbia in 2007, it is one of the symbols of Novi Sad.
The conservation and restoration works on this building included the renovation of the southern and western facades. Despite the many challenges posed by the facade’s specific design and materials, the palace has been restored to its former glory.
