Monument to Vuk Karadžić
Author: Đorđe Jovanović - (Bronze, erected 1937).
The Monument to Vuk Karadžić was erected in 1937 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vuk’s birth and was made from funds collected by the citizens of Serbia over 10 years. This detail further emphasizes the depth of the collective contribution and adds additional value to the meaning of the monument, making it an important point of collective memory.
The work is by sculptor Đorđe Jovanović, the founder of Serbian modern sculpture, and is considered the only monumental public monument dedicated to Vuk Karadžić, a key figure in the Serbian nation.
The figure, about 7 meters high, represents Vuk Karadžić with a book in hand, recognizable for the symbolism of his importance to language and culture. The parallelepiped pedestal, simple in structure, contributes to the subtle evolution of aesthetics, incorporating subtle nuances of modernism.
Due to its artistic and historical value, the monument was declared a cultural monument in 1965, and in 2022, our team of experts, as part of the regular maintenance project of public monuments and memorials in Belgrade, carried out restoration and conservation work on this culturally and historically important symbol of Belgrade.
