Spanjola Fortress
Gornji Grad Fortress in Herceg Novi, which is popularly known as Španjola, is located on Bajer Hill, at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. It was built at the end of the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation of Boka Kotorska.
Throughout history, this fortress played a significant role in the defense of the city, until the beginning of the 20th century, while during World War II it served as a prison.
The Španjola complex today consists of a rectangular fortress with massive walls with 4 circular bastions at the corners from the period of the Ottoman administration, the southern perimeter built during the Venetian domination and the Merzer battery on the eastern part, which was built in the last decades of the 19th century during the Austro-Hungarian administration.
In order to revitalize the fortress of Španjola, work began in March 2025.
