The King's Fountain
The author is unknown, installed in 1936.
The memorial fountain of King Alexander the First is located in the municipality of Savski venac, in the immediate vicinity of Velisava Vulovića Street, at the location of the former stone maidan in Lisiči potok. It is one of 32 fountains with spring water in the territory of the city of Belgrade.
Construction of the fountain began in 1932, and it was built in 1936 in memory of the murdered King Alexander. The initiative to restore Kraljeva cesma and decorate the plateau with the installation of a monument to the victims of revolutionary terror has a dual purpose. On the one hand, the necessity of expressing reverence to the murdered King Alexander the Unifier, and on the other, the marking of a memorial site for our fellow citizens who perished in the whirlwind of the revolution without a trial or a chance to defend themselves. Before the war, Česma was a favorite school picnic spot.
The fountain is built with red syenite, a specific stone from the area around Bor.
The project involves the restoration of the complete fountain with the bronze mask of the lion's head and the consolidation of the rock section behind the fountain, in order to return the fountain to its former appearance and disappear features.
The monogram of King Alexander I, which was destroyed after World War II, was made and installed, as well as the missing plaque with the inscription:
"I have the flow of life, of eternal youth."
and the murmur of a song of pure joy.
whoever drinks my stream gets younger
he who listens to the murmur rejoices."
