Fort MAMULA

Fort Mamula is located on Lastavica Island, in front of Herceg Novi, at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Built in the mid-19th century by Austrian General Lazar Mamula, after whom it was named, it was constructed for defensive purposes. It represents a masterpiece of military engineering characterized by remarkable precision in construction and monumentality. With a diameter of about 200 meters, the fortress follows the island’s configuration and consists of a ring fortification with a series of arched chambers with openings for cannons on the outer wall, and circular-shaped towers on two levels with a flat roof covered with a layer of soil, with an open circular courtyard in the center. Due to its isolated location, the Austro-Hungarian army never used the fortress as a military stronghold but rather as prison cells, as did the navy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during World War I, while during World War II, the fortress was used as an Italian concentration camp.

We proudly announce the successful completion of the comprehensive project for the restoration of this cultural heritage site. The reconstruction, rehabilitation, and restoration of Fort Mamula in Herceg Novi involved a professional approach to conservation and a deep understanding of its historical significance to preserve the authenticity and spirit of this important monument while adapting it to modern needs.
